On Friday, February 10th, at 5 am a barge of sand and gravel from Sechelt arrived in Brentwood Bay to begin the beach enhancement shore restoration in Tod Inlet (SṈIDȻEȽ or the Place of Blue Grouse). The placement of gravel and sand on the shore is the culmination of several years’ work with the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations communities, BC Park and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The clean sediment will replace the removed sand and gravel that was contaminated by historical industrial waste and practice.

Immediately after the beach was created anew, we  witnessed many families relaxing on shore with children playing in the clean gravel and sand. In short order, there will be features on the shore to further increase habitats for marine intertidal life.

We will celebrate the renewal of the shore as the weather warms with the whole community of the Peninsula. This is just the beginning of our long term goal to recover the health of the estuary. Let the show begin!
