SeaChange is dedicated to conservation, restoration and education around coastal and nearshore environments and operates along the coast of the Pacific Northwest.

Coastal Habitat Mapper

Location: Victoria, BC

SeaChange Marine Conservation Society is looking for someone passionate about coastal geomorphology to join our team as a Coastal Habitat Mapper on a contract basis. We are looking for 2 people who are willing to learn and are committed to producing high quality mapping products as part of a team.

SeaChange Marine Conservation Society is a Victoria non-profit organization that is passionate about marine conservation and restoration. A key project of ours is the use of the ShoreZone mapping protocol, which has been implemented along the coastline from Alaska to Oregon, and now also on the East Coast of Canada, and is available as an online resource for use in oil spill planning and response, environmental assessment and resource management (https://seachangesociety.com or www.ShoreZone.org).

Principal Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret low-altitude, oblique aerial images using ShoreZone coastal habitat mapping protocols.

• Creation of habitat polygons using a custom ArcGIS app.

• Use the ShoreZone Mapping Protocol for mapping coastlines imaged in BC and the East Coast of Canada.

• Complete coastal habitat classification in a timely fashion.

• Participate in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QAQC) process.

• Participate in summarizing and reporting of ShoreZone imaging and habitat mapping data as needed.

• Process ShoreZone aerial imagery.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.

• Good knowledge of coastal geomorphology in the Pacific Northwest (Atlantic Canada is an asset) with strong analytical skills.

• Experience with Microsoft Teams/Word/Excel. Microsoft Access and ArcGIS is an asset.

• Ability to concentrate for long periods of time on image interpretation and database entry.

• Strong time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Cost conscientiousness, effectively working within approved budgets.

• Strong communication (both written and verbal), and the ability to interact effectively with clients, employees, and management.

• Ability to listen and take constructive feedback.

• Ability to work as part of a team showing good judgement and adaptability.

• Supportive of a healthy and inclusive work environment.

Job Type: Full-time, Contract
Positions to fill: 2
Contract length: 4 months with the probability of extension.
Work Location: Remote with potential for hybrid work in office with a strong preference for a local candidate in Victoria.
Salary: $22.00-$25.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.
Expected hours: up to 35 per week with a flexible daily working schedule.
