Atl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound

Howe Sound/Atl’ka7tsem is an ecologically rich fjord within the Squamish Nation’s traditional territory, and located adjacent to the growing metropolis of Greater Vancouver. Its shoreline is characterized by steep rocky cliffs and shorelines, making the rare pocket coves, estuaries, and cobble beaches in the region critically valuable for supporting important marine species.

In 2018, we led three community meetings, surveyed twelve sites for restoration activities, and conducted five eelgrass transplants (Brigade Bay, Long Bay, Halkett Bay, Cotton Bay, Plumper Cove). In total, approximately 3650 eelgrass shoots were planted across the five transplant sites. We also participated in several community education and engagement events.

2019 will see a continuation of eelgrass transplants in the Sound, with the addition of marine riparian restoration, subtidal debris removal, and nearshore signage installation.
