Flying over Gabarus Cove, Nova Scotia! 🚁🗺

On Cape Breton Island, there are several lakes right along the coastline, like Levers Lake and Harris Lake. Cape Breton Island is also home to Bras d’Or Lakes, an estuarine tidal lake that is connected to the North Atlantic Ocean. It was designated the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

This photo was taken during ShoreZone surveys on the East Coast for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. During this survey, 2,092km of shoreline was surveyed with 18,422 high-resolution photos collected.

The Resilient Estuaries of the Salish Sea (RESS) p

The Resilient Estuaries of the Salish Sea (RESS) project has kicked 2025 off strong with biodiversity surveys and marine debris cleanups on Mayne Island!

The team removed 790kg of debris from Horton Bay, including a toilet, tires, and mattress tops.

Why is marine debris removal important? Debris and garbage on the seafloor can smother habitat for benthic marine plant and animal species. Some debris like rope can entangle marine life and people, while others can leach chemicals and pollutants into the water, making it more uninhabitable for wildlife and us. Removing debris can help improve the habitat, encourage wildlife establishment, and make the water safer for everyone!

We are so grateful for all the support for these cleanup efforts and to all of those who were a part of this important work. We hope this will bring attention to the issue of underwater debris impacting marine ecosystems.
