Position: Education Program Leader for waterfront, Lifeguard certified

This will be a Service Canada summer job commencing April 24 and ending June 26, 2019. Maximum duration is 9 weeks. Funding for these positions is pending. 

To be eligible, applicants must: 

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; 
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Work tasks and responsibilities: This job has multiple tasks. Initial tasks will be to participate in the preparation and training for an environmental education program for elementary and middle schools on the water in Tod Inlet (SṈIDȻEȽ, pronounced sngeet- kwith in the Sencoten language – the Place of Blue Grouse to the W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples), near Brentwood Bay. Both program leadership and water safety are components of the job. Bronze Cross or higher water safety certification is required of at least 1 of the 2 people filling this position. Use of a small motorized vessel as a chase boat will also be required. 

Qualifications: In addition to the Service Canada criteria at the top of this page, we will be looking for people with the mix of experience and education that best meets the job duties. We are looking for competent people who have experience working with youth and who are able to work both independently and with a team of educators. Communication skills in oral, written and public presentations are needed. 

Assets to the job include: 

  • Bronze Cross or higher water safety certification 
  • Small boat handling experience including power boats
  • Environmental education program experience
  • Familiarity with Coast Salish culture.

Hours and pay: 35 hours per week at $18 per hour plus vacation payout. The job is too short in duration for holiday pay. No overtime.
