We are excited to grow our nearshore restoration team for the summer and are offering two 9-week positions starting as soon as June 4th. Since this is a Service Canada funded position candidates will be aged 15-30. Once hired the duo will be trained and work together to conduct nearshore ecological mapping by boat on the Saanich Peninsula (near Victoria, BC). Small craft operation experience is essential and familiarity with ecological field surveys and GPS mapping will be preferred.

Job Announcement

 

 Position:  Land survey Technician (from the water) 2 positions open 

This is a Service Canada summer jobcommencing as soon as June 4with 9 weeks maximum employment. Possibility of up to 6 week extension exists. To be eligible, applicants must: 

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. 

Work tasks and responsibilities:  This job has “Land” in the title, but most of it occurs on a small vessel close to shore near the Saanich Peninsula. Land Survey Technician was the closest NOC job title available for the job description. Initial tasks will be preparation and training for nearshore ecological mapping. The boat will be launched closer to the work area to be mapped. Boat operation, towing and launching of the boat are part of the job.  

Qualifications: In addition to the Service Canada criteria at the top of this page, we will be looking for people with the mix of experience and education that best meets the job duties. We are looking for competent people who can work well together. This duo will work on the water together once trained.  Familiarity with marine nearshore habitat and comfort aboard a small vessel are essential.  Must be able to communicate well in writing and verbally.  

Assets to the job include: 

  • Small boat handling experience including power boats.
  • Experience towing, launching and retrieving small vessels. 
  • Familiarity with a variety of electronic tools such as gps units and tow cameras.
  • Familiarity with ecological asset mapping and data sheet use.  

Hours and pay:  40 hours per week at $19 per hour plus vacation payout.  The job is too short in duration for holiday pay. No overtime.
